Is NAD+ Therapy Actually Worth the Hype?
Medically reviewed by Dr Hassan Almuaathen, ZEN Healthcare Dubai
NAD+ has become one of the most talked-about therapies in longevity and wellness circles — but what is it actually doing inside the body? Dr Hassan Almuaathen of ZEN Healthcare Dubai explains the biology behind NAD+, and where the evidence-based case for it stands.
What NAD+ Actually Does in the Body
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is essentially a cellular transporter. Its job is to carry hydrogen to the mitochondria — the part of the cell responsible for producing energy. Mitochondria need both hydrogen and oxygen to generate the fuel that keeps cells running.
This is not a niche process confined to one organ system. Every single cell in the human body — nerve cells, bone cells, muscle cells, hair cells, cells in the eyes, skin and internal organs — contains mitochondria and depends on this fuel supply to function properly. When NAD+ levels are adequate, that energy-production process runs as it should.
“NAD+ is essentially a cellular transporter. What it actually does is carry hydrogen to the mitochondria — and every single cell in the human body needs that fuel to function properly.”
Where NAD+ Therapy Is Used Clinically
Because NAD+ underpins energy production at the cellular level, physicians use NAD+ infusion therapy to support a wide range of conditions. According to Dr Hassan, these include:
- Neurological support — addressing neurological damage, including conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease
- Inflammatory and chronic illness support — including arthritis and organ or liver-related decline
- Addiction support — patients working through alcohol addiction often report a significant reduction in cravings, typically after a minimum of ten sessions
- Mental health and sleep — supporting depression, anxiety and sleep issues by helping regulate the circadian rhythm, adrenal glands and cortisol levels
NAD+ and Healthy Ageing
NAD+ levels decline naturally as we get older. Maintaining higher levels of NAD+ is linked to supporting overall cellular health and skin health, which is part of why it is increasingly discussed as a tool for slowing visible and cellular signs of ageing. Rather than relying solely on external anti-ageing treatments, Dr Hassan recommends focusing on optimising NAD+ levels internally, while avoiding the habits and substances that deplete it.
Please note: NAD+ therapy is provided subject to medical suitability following consultation. It is not suitable for everyone, individual results vary, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease. Any treatment discussed here is prescribed and monitored by a qualified physician.

Dr Hassan on NAD+ and Cellular Energy
Watch the explainer directly from our medical team:
In this clip, Dr Hassan explains that NAD+ acts as a carrier that transports hydrogen to the mitochondria — the part of the cell that produces energy — and that every cell in the body, from nerve and muscle to skin and organ cells, depends on this process to function.
- NAD+ is essential to how mitochondria generate cellular energy
- NAD+ levels decline naturally with age
- Maintaining healthy NAD+ levels is linked to supporting overall cellular function and skin health
- Dr Hassan recommends supporting NAD+ levels internally and limiting habits that deplete it, alongside any in-clinic therapy
What NAD+ Therapy May Help Support
- Neurological support — may support neurological health, including conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, subject to medical suitability
- Inflammatory & chronic illness — designed to support the body in the context of arthritis and organ or liver-related decline, alongside medical care
- Addiction support — may support craving reduction for patients working through alcohol addiction, typically after a minimum of ten sessions
- Mental health & sleep — may support depression, anxiety and sleep quality by supporting circadian rhythm and cortisol regulation
